Sabarimala: With prime minister Narendra Modi showering praises on the 'Punyam Poonkavanam' project during his 'Mann ki Baat' address to the nation, volunteers and staff engaged in keeping the Lord Ayyappa Temple and surroundings clean are an elated lot. Modi had termed Poonkavam as a model for the entire country.

‘Punyam Poonkavanam’ was launched at the initiative of IG P Vijayan. One hour every day is set apart by police and central security personnel, devaswom staff and workers of the Ayyappa Seva Sangham and Ayyappa Seva Samajam to clean Sannidhanam and surrounding areas. Members of the Visudhi Sena keep a watch on waste dumping and remove it without delay.

With such earnest workers around, the Sabarimala Sannidhanam - which once witnessed mountains of garbage piling up during the pilgrimage season - is now a better place. The Punyam Poonkanam project also spreads the message of keeping the surroundings clean among pilgrims hailing from various states and the impact of this awareness drive is evident.
