Sumi Vivera fell in love with the crisp cottons and soft silks as she grew up watching her mother seam amazing garments in a small stitching shop that she owned. She quit her job as a microbiologist as her heart clearly laid in the fashion industry and wished to open a boutique of her own.
Sumi began her own venture in 2007 with just a few pieces of women’s kurtas. She went shop-hopping for good quality fabrics in vivid patterns and colour palettes, and got it stitched by a friend in the stylish designs suggested by Sumi herself. The smart entrepreneur in Sumi was ready to explore the possibilities that social media offered and posted the pictures of her designer kurtas on her Facebook page. The response was overwhelming and all the pieces were sold within just a few days. It was then she realized the scope and extensive reach of an online business venture. Initially she connected with her countless buyers through Facebook and Whattsapp. Sumi would put up a preview post two days prior to the launching of a new design or product, and then post the pictures and other details once the product becomes available.
The size chart would be send to individual customers as enquiries for a product come up. The customers could then place the order once the measurements are finalised. The product is dispatched to the buyer through courier as soon as the payment is received in the account. There are a number of payment options available including the internet banking.
It would take up to 20 days to deliver a product outside India and extra delivery charges are applicable. If the customer is somehow not satisfied with the product when it reaches them, they can return it. Though the money is usually not refunded, it could be included as payment for their next purchase. Sumi also runs an online wholesale garment business. The enthusiastic entrepreneur, who gave up her profession to pursue her passion, earns up to Rs 1 lakh a month through her various online ventures.
Sumi even has a word of advice for those who share a similar dream. “It would be really beneficially if the newbies have some amazing offers in their kitty to attract customers. When I started off I didn’t charge any extra fee for delivering the product anywhere within the country. This offer was on for only a short period of time. Compromises should not be on the quality of the product or the uniqueness in the design. We shouldn’t lose a customer who tries to contact us after seeing our product post on the social media. It would be advisable to reply as soon as we receive their message. Even if we are away from our place for a couple of days, we should post a message about it on our social media pages,” says the successful business woman.
An advantage of online shops is that the products could be presented in the most attractive way. In a traditional shop, one could even miss a gorgeous piece of clothing amid hundreds of fabrics and materials, but in an online shop even the minutest detailing in a design could grab the attention of potential buyers.
Sumi says that a huge amount of money is required as initial investment to open a garment store or a designer boutique, whereas myriads of opportunities are offered at the online platform to venture into a business. As her business flourished and the number of customers increased significantly, Sumi started a stitching unit with a few employees. Now she has opened a garment store adjoining to the stitching unit.
In the beginning Sumi used to collect fabrics from the various shops around Kochi, now she travels around the country in search of amazing fabrics and mesmerizing designs to sew sartorial elegance for her loyal customers.
