A stunt of sorts unfolded at the Shakthan bus stand a couple of days ago with a do-no-good eve-teaser and a diminutive homemaker battling it out along a busy hub. It could well be a random shot for an action movie. But this was no reel stunt, but a real-life bash-up with a smart housewife giving the lesson of his life to a 33-year-old man who thought the woman he had decided to stalk would fall for his enticements.
"Shall we go for a movie?" he asked the woman who had come to town for a purchase. All he remembered next was a resounding slap on his face. The ensuing drama had actors aplenty drawn from the public and the police force. Here's a shot-by-shot image of what happened recently.
It’s 10.45 am on that hot, blazing day somewhere in the vicinity of the old Army Road in Thrissur right in front of the City Police commissioner’s office. The homemaker from Chovvur had run into town to get her watch fixed.
She then spots an aimless youngster leering at her from a distance even as she is buying up provisions. The chechi who manages the shop also notices the drooling looks the man keeps sending across. But she’s unfazed. Oh, this a regular feature here, she says. Our homemaker, her purchase done, heads for the Shakthan bus stand.
She boards her bus and settles down in her seat. The eve-teaser is back by the side of the bus where she sits trying to grab her attention. A sweets vendor who hops in calls her attention to the man pining for her outside. The woman is clearly bugged. What’s it that you want, she yells at him. The man calmly tells her: How about chilling out at the cinemas? The woman has had enough. She alights, heads straight for the loafer and smack goes her hand. The man, smarting from the unexpected slap reels for a second, recovers, grabs the woman’s hand, twists it around, throws her down and bolts.
The woman gets up, cries out in pain, but runs after the man in hot pursuit. The bus crew and union leaders join her and ultimately overpower him. The cops including the Vanitha police land on the scene.
The drama is not over. The woman rains slaps on her tormentor. Though the cops try to shoo her away, the crowd eggs her on. Go on, they yell… Go on. The slaps continue.
The woman then calls her husband. She waits outside the police station till the cops slap a case on him. The formalities over, she walks home with the air of one who has just won a war, bold and dignified.
As for the villain, Malippuram-native Jithin, he was charged for eve-teasing and harassing a woman and let off later on bail.
