Doha: The Al Farha compound near the Ashgal office at Abu Hamoor wholesale market roundabout is home to one of the most beautiful vegetable gardens where huge varieties of organic vegetables are perfectly grown. Kollam native Fousia deserves the credit for making such an amazing kitchen garden in her backyard.
Fousia turned a strip of 7 meters long vacant area in her plot, into an amazing organic vegetable garden. She has grown flowering plants and other shrubs outside her compound as well. The varieties of vines that Fousia has allowed to grow in her compound are marvellous. It is from the krishi bhavan in her home town in Kerala that she purchases the high quality seeds which are sown at her vegetable garden in Qatar.
Lady finger, bitter gourd, beans, egg plants, pumpkin, varieties of cucumber, white water melon, spinach, lettuce, green chilies, capsicum, coriander leaves and mint are some of vegetables that are grown at Fousia's garden. Besides all these, she has a few banana plantains in her garden as well.
She would usually spread some soil mixed with organic manure under every crop. Crumbled egg shells and tea stalks are the organic fertilizers that Fousia uses in her garden. Chemical fertilizers aren't used at all in the garden and Fousia’s crops are hardly affected by insects.
Fousia says that she would sprinkle some water mixed with curry leaves and garlic paste if she finds an insect attack on her crops. She reaps lady finger and beans on alternate days. Many vegetables including pumpkin are getting ready to be reaped.
Fousia never buys vegetables from outside to her own kitchen. Extra ones would be distributed for free among the employees in her husband’s company. Her husband Khaleel runs a company named Goodwin Qatar in the new industrial area which produces and distributes GRP plastic. Fousia’s son Ajmal helps Khaleel in his business. Ajmal’s wife Dr Nisa who is a dentist also helps Fousia in her garden.
