Nafeeza Shafi

Thaliparamba (Kannur): Nafeeza Shafi’s house resembles an old curio shop. Take a closer look and these articles reveal the story of their origin. Nafeeza has crafted a variety of objects out of newspaper sheets. She could make almost everything out of bundles of paper that most people throw into bins or give away to scrap dealers.

The Thaliparamba resident pursues a variety of hobbies, including stitching and cooking, but her focus has now shifted to newspaper craft. She rolls and twists newspaper pages into seemingly impossible shapes.

The result is a collection of baskets, flower vases and other items that dot her house. Her largest creation is a flower vase that stands tall at four and a half feet. A dash of color and the newspaper vase could be passed on as a wicker basket.

Nefeeza says anything crafted out of bamboo could be made of newspapers too. She has even made a newspaper curtain that resembles a bamboo blind.
