The special team tasked with protecting the sandal reserve forest of Marayur just added woman power to it. Athira P Vijayan and P S Sreedevi became the first women forest officers to guard the vulnerable patch of forest from illegal loggers.
Athira and Sreedevi, both engineering graduates, will work within the Nachivayal forest station inside the Marayur forest range. They will join the 24 women forest officers in Idukki district.
They joined the force after a six-month training in Thrissur. About 40 beat forest officers have been appointed in various forest divisions across Kerala.
Athira is the daughter of P K Vijayan from Pariyaram near Thodupuzha. Sreedevi is the daughter of P P Sadanandan of Kuttiplangad near Koottikkal.
