Melbourne: Roger Federer broke down in tears after claiming a record-equaling sixth Australian Open title here on Sunday.
The Swiss maestro turned emotional during his victory speech after a gripping final against Croat Marin Cilic.
“Winning is an absolute dream come true. The fairytale continues for us, for me. After the great year I had last year, it’s incredible. I’d like to thank Marin, another great tournament. World No. 3, that’s a hell of an achievement.”
He then thanked Cilic’s team before emotions got the better of him. “I have to stop,” a moist-eyed Federer said before breaking down.
Federer's dad also cried in the crowd even as tennis great Rod Laver took photos on his mobile phone. Cilic, meanwhile, tried to make Federer look on the bright side.
Federer then composed himself and went for his lap of honor with the trophy.
