Chennai: Fighting knocks by Baba Indrajith and Shahrukh Khan helped Tamil Nadu stage a splendid recovery on the opening day of their Ranji Trophy Elite Group B match against Kerala at the Chepauk here on Thursday. The hosts reached a respectable 249/6 at the end of a hard-fought day.
Tamil Nadu, who chose to bat, were wrecked early on by the Kerala new ball pair of Sandeep Warrier and Basil Thampi. Warrier drew first blood by removing former Indian opener Abhinav Mukund in the first over of the match for a duck. The right-arm pacer then castled Baba Aparajith for three.
Thampi too got into the act and his twin strikes left the home side reeling at 31/4. Opener Kaushik (16) and the experienced Dinesh Karthick (4) found Thampi too hot to handle.
Indrajith and N Jagadeesan (21) put on 50 for the fifth wicket before the former fell to Jalaj Saxena. Indrajith (87) and Khan (82 batting) added 103 runs for the sixth wicket and dashed Kerala's hopes of dismissing the hosts for a below-par total.
Warrier finally breached the defences of Indrajith to end his 188-ball knock. The right-hander hit eight boundaries. Khan and M Mohammed (25 batting) have so far added 65 runs for the seventh wicket.
Brief scores: Tamil Nadu 249/6 in 90 overs (Baba Indrajith 87, Shahrukh Khan 82 batting; Sandeep Warrier 3/42) vs Kerala.
