Kottayam: A stunning collapse for the second time in the match has left Kerala on the brink of defeat in their Ranji Trophy Group B tie against holders Gujarat at Nadiad on Monday.
Kerala lost their last six wickets for 45 runs to be bowled out for 203 in their second innings. The hosts, who gained a first innings lead of 99, were 22/1 at stumps on the third day in their chase of 105.
Left-arm spinner Siddharth Desai ran through the Kerala batting line-up to end up with figures of 6/80 while leg spinner Piyush Chawla picked up 3/66.
Kerala captain Sachin Baby and outstation professional K.B. Arun Karthik put on 99 runs for the fifth wicket to steady the visitors after they were tottering at 59/4. Karthik, who was moved down the order from his opening spot, top-scored with 69 while Baby made 59. But once the left-handed Baby was dismissed by Desai, Kerala lost wickets in a heap. Karthik was the ninth wicket to fall. He hit six fours and a six in his 148-ball knock.
Kerala had lost their last six wickets for just 36 in their first innings.
Brief scores: Kerala 208 and 203 all out in 76.3 overs (K. B. Arun Karthik 69, Sachin Baby 59; Siddharth Desai 6/80, Piyush Chawla 3/66) vs Gujarat 307 all out in 106.3 overs (Chirag Gandhi 91, Samit Gohel 69; Akshay Chandran 3/52; M.D. Nidheesh 3/58) and 22/1 in 13 overs.
