London: A carer from Kerala has been sentenced to 20 months in prison in Britain for molesting a 78-year-old dementia patient. Solomon Thomas (46), a resident of West Derby in Liverpool, was caught in the act by his colleague after he sneaked into the old woman’s room at night.
Thomas, an evangelist from Pathanamthitta, was hired by a nursing home six months ago after completing all background checks. He has three children.
He was accused of entering the patient’s room around 2 am and molesting her. The motion sensor alarm in the room was found to have been switched off. However, Thomas’s colleague watched the crime and reported it to her superiors.
Thomas denied the accusation initially but DNA tests on the serum, thought to be saliva, found on the woman nailed him. He later confessed to his interrogators, the prosecutor told the court.
The victim has withdrawn after the incident, her daughter said. She has been viewing with suspicion even doctors of Asian origin.
The court has also ordered to include the name of the convict in the sexual offenders’ registry for 10 years.
