Soon, a mobile tower on the moon
The moon will get its first mobile phone network in 2019, enabling high-definition streaming from the lunar landscape back to earth, part of a project to back the first privately funded moon mission.
Vodafone Germany, network equipment maker Nokia and carmaker Audi said on Tuesday they were working together to support the mission, 50 years after the first NASA astronauts walked on the moon.
The companies are working with Berlin-based company PTScientists on the project, with a launch scheduled in 2019 from Cape Canaveral on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. Read more
'Beast from the East' blankets Britain and Ireland in snow
Much of Britain and Ireland was blanketed in snow on Wednesday as freezing Siberian weather dubbed "the Beast from the East" disrupted the travel plans of thousands. Hundreds of schools were closed and there were delays on roads, railways and at airports on one of the coldest days Britain has experienced at this time of the year for almost three decades.
Temperatures fell to minus 12 Celsius in some rural areas while Britain's weather service warned of up to 40 cm of snow in higher areas of Scotland. Read more
Porsche to launch electric cars
Embarking on its Mission-E, luxury car maker Porsche, part of the Volkswagen group, will launch its first fully electric vehicle (EV) in India in the beginning of 2020, a company official said.
This will mark a step ahead for the uber-luxury German brand which has been operating in India since 2012 and has so far been selling only fully imported cars here as the company does have any manufacturing or assembly units outside its home country.
The India launch will follow the global launch in the last quarter of 2019, he said, adding that the prototype was showcased at the Frankfurt motor show in 2015. Click to read
Indian women beat SA 3-1 to win T20 series
Indian women accomplished a 'historic double' as they outclassed South Africa women by 54 runs in the fifth and final Twenty20 International to clinch the series 3-1, on Saturday.
After Mithali Raj led the side to a 2-1 series win in the ODIs, it was Harmanpreet Kaur's turn to lift the trophy as they become the first cricket team to win two formats in the Rainbow nation. Read more
Blaster's hopes in ISL Season 4 ends
Kerala Blasters' hopes in the Indian Super League (ISL) Season 4 ended after FC Goa thrashed ATK 5-1 in Margao Wednesday night. Goa's win meant Blasters would not advance even if they got the better of table leaders Bengaluru FC in their final league game. Blasters, who finished runners-up last season, never really got going this time around. The Yellow Brigade was made to pay dearly for its extremely slow start. Read more
