1. Decks clearing for Putin's reelection as Russian prez
Russian President Vladimir Putin Wednesday submitted his application for registration as an independent candidate in the 2018 Russian presidential election.
A public opinion poll conducted in early December, shortly after Putin announced his intention to run, revealed that 67 per cent of Russians intended to vote for the incumbent. The closest contenders were Vladimir Zhirinovsky, head of the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR) with eight per cent and Gennady Zyuganov, the head of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation (KPRF), with 4 per cent. 2. Indian economy to be 5th largest in 2018: World Economic League
India's economy is expected to overtake that of Britain and France to become the world's fifth largest in dollar terms in 2018 and third largest in 2032, the World Economic League Table (WELT) said on Wednesday. It would be the first time when the Indian economy will overtake the UK and France in real money dollar terms. Read more
3. Apple faces lawsuits after saying it slows down aging iPhones
Apple Inc defrauded iPhone users by slowing devices without warning to compensate for poor battery performance, according to eight lawsuits filed in various federal courts in the week since the company opened up about the year-old software change. The tweak may have led iPhone owners to misguided attempts to resolve issues over the last year, the lawsuits contend. Read more
4. BSNL 4G services to start from Kerala in January
State-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) is set to launch its 4G services from Kerala next month, followed by Odisha, a top company official said. The telecom corporation hopes that the ensuing 4G launch on Long Term Evolution route (a standard for high-speed wireless communication) will enable its mobile customers to enjoy faster data speeds and improve its user experience. 5. Telangana farmers to get free electricity from December 31
Farmers in Telangana will get 24-hour free power supply from the midnight of December 31, the state government said on Thursday. As many as 23 lakh agricultural pump sets will be provided free power boosting the overall power demand to 11,000 MW by March next year. Read more
6. Former soccer star 'King George' Weah becomes Liberian president.
Former soccer star George Weah has won Liberia's presidential run-off election and will succeed incumbent Ellen Johnson Sirleaf next month, the country's first democratic transition in over 70 years. With 98.1 per cent of the vote counted, Weah led with 61.5 per cent to vice- president Joseph Boakai's 38.5 per cent. Read more
7. El Clasico: Barcelona thrash Real Madrid 3-0
Real Madrid's hopes of retaining their La Liga title appeared to be fading fast as goals from Luis Suarez, Lionel Messi and Aleix Vidal propelled Barcelona to a 3-0 win in the 'Clasico' on Saturday, lifting them 14-points clear of their rivals in the standings. Read more
