Bharat Ratna for Pranab Mukherjee, Nanaji Deshmukh, Bhupen Hazarika

Former President Pranab Mukherjee, Bharatiya Jana Sangh leader Nanaji Deshmukh and singer Bhupen Hazarika were on Friday conferred the country's highest civilian award Bharat Ratna. The Bharat Ratna has been conferred after a gap of four years. Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and founder of Banaras Hindu University Madan Mohan Malviya were given the award by the Narendra Modi government in 2015. In an official statement, the government said Deshmukh and Hazarika were conferred the award posthumously.

Industry veteran A M Naik of L&T group, President of Djibouti Ismail Guelleh, who extended support for rescusing Indians from war hit Yemen, folk singer Teejan Bai and Marathi theatre legend B M Purandare were on Friday chosen for the second highest civilan honour Padma Vibhushan on the 70th Republic Day.

In all, 112 Padma awards were released by Rashtrapati Bhawan, which included 14 Padma Bhushans and 94 Padma Shri. Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Kariya Munda, Malyalam actor Mohan Lal, late journalist Kuldeep Nayyar, S Nambi Naraynan, the space scientist who was jailed on trumped up espionage charges, mountaineering personality Bechandri Pal, former CAG V.K. Shunglu and BJP MP Hukum Dev Narayan Yadav for Padma Bhushan awardees.

Daredevil Navy, Air Force men who saved many during Kerala deluge win gallantry awards

The officers of the Navy and the Air Force who led the rescue efforts in Kerala have been honoured with gallantry awards. This includes four from the Navy and one from the Air Force.

Commander Vijay Varma, Commander T Anoop Kumar, Amit and Premendra Kumar from the Navy who were in the forefront of the rescue efforts won the Gallantry Award. It was Vijay Varma who flew the helicopter that rescued 24 people, including two pregnant women.

Wing Commander Prasanth Bhuvanendran Nair of the Air Force’s Garud Commando Force won the Gallantry Award for playing a big role in rescuing 112 people, including two children and a 102-year-old woman. Sergeant Amit Kumar Jha, who played a key role in rescue efforts during Cyclone Ockhi, too won the award.
