Battle for Karnataka: Supreme Court sets the deadline for Saturday

The Supreme Court on Friday ordered a floor test in the Karnataka Assembly at 4 pm on Saturday, reducing the 15-day window given by the governor to BJP chief minister B S Yeddyurappa to prove majority.

The BJP has 104 MLAs, that is, nine short of simple majority. The Congress-JD(S) combine on the other hand has claimed to have adequate numbers and had requested the governor to allow the coalition to form the government in the southern state.

In a ripple effect stemming from developments in Karnataka, the Congress in Goa and Manipur and the RJD in Bihar, which is the single largest party in the respective states, on Thursday said they will approach the state governors and stake claim for government formation.

The US Senate confirmed Gina Haspel on Thursday to be director of the CIA, ending a bruising confirmation fight centered on her ties to the spy agency's past use of waterboarding and other brutal interrogation techniques. Haspel, who will be the first woman to lead the CIA, is a 33-year veteran at the agency currently serving as its acting director.

The proposed project aims to facilitate goods movement to Cochin Port from the industrial clusters in Bengaluru and Coimbatore and boost the industrial growth of the state.

Defending champions India entered the summit clash of the women's Asian Champions Trophy after edging past Malaysia 3-2, their third consecutive victory on Thursday. India, who beat Japan 4-1 and China 3-1 in their previous matches, qualified for the final with a match in hand. They are sitting atop the table with nine points and next take on hosts Korea in their final pool match on Saturday before Sunday's final.
