Chennai: The ruling AIADMK in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday announced that the party's deputy general secretary T.T.V. Dinakaran will contest as its candidate in the R.K. Nagar assembly by-elections.
Dinakaran is nephew of jailed party general secretary V.K. Sasikala.
“Victorious candidate for Amma's treasured constituency is our Respected Dy.Gen Secretary Thiru. TTV. Dhinakaran Avarghal,” the party said in its official Twitter handle after a governing council meeting in the party headquarters.
The R.K. Nagar Assembly seat fell vacant following the demise of former chief minister Jayalalithaa.
The election commission had announced last week that bypoll will be conducted on April 12 and the counting of votes on April 15.
After Jayalalithaa's demise, it was speculated that Sasikala would contest the bypoll from R.K. Nagar. However, her plans were dashed by a Supreme Court verdict which upheld her conviction in a disproportionate assets case. Sasikala was sent to Parappana agrahara jail in Karnataka and barred from contesting elections for 10 years as per the verdict.
Jayalalithaa's niece Deepa Jayakumar, who is a known rival of the Sasikala camp, has already announced her decision to contest the bypoll.
Deepa had also launched a forum called the MGR Amma Deepa Federation and vowed to retrieve the two leaves symbol of the ruling party.
Recently, she alleged that she was being threatened by supporters of Sasikala after she announced her decision to contest from RK Nagar.
Meanwhile, the faction led by estranged AIADMK leader and former chief minister O. Panneerselvam said on Tuesday that they would announce their candidate soon.
