New Delhi: The All India Muslim Personal Law Board has come out in support of Kapil Sibal, their counsel in the Ramjanmbhoomi Babri Masjid case, 'endorsing' the statements made by him in the court on Tuesday.
Following this, Haji Mehboob, the Ayodhya case petitioner, said that he had nothing more to say if that was the stand taken by the board.
Earlier the statement made by the cousel in the court had kicked up a hornet's nest with parties, including petitioners and the Sunni Waqf Board saying they wanted an 'early resolution'. The Congress party had also distanced itself from the senior leader's statements in the court.
On Tuesday, senior counsel Kapil Sibal, who represents the Waqf board in the case, had asked the apex court to hear the matter only in July 2019.
BJP President Amit Shah had on Wednesday said it proved that Kapil Sibal was speaking on the Congress' behalf when he sought to delay the Supreme Court hearing till after the 2019 general elections.
"Now that the Sunni Waqf Board has said that they don't agree with what Kapil Sibal said in the apex court, it is certain that Sibal spoke in his capacity as a Congress leader, with the blessings of party high command," Shah said in a tweet.
"Shameful posturing by the Congress on Ram Temple issue!" he said.
The Bharatiya Janata Party had criticized Sibal for his stand, and claimed he did it at the Congress' behest.
On Wednesday, one of the Babri Masjid litigants, Haji Mehboob, had said the Muslims wanted early resolution of the decades-old dispute, contradicting Sibal's contention only to change his stand later.
