Kochi: "My parents would be the happiest persons to see me celebrating my 100th birthday," Dr. Philipose Mar Chrysostom Mar Thoma Valiya Metropolitan said here on Monday.

"My mother worried that I would struggle to survive. 'Who would look after him when I leave,' was her biggest concern. Now, when they look down from heaven, both of them will be delighted to see their son living happily in the company of good-hearted people in Kerala and celebrating his 100th birthday," Mar Chrysostom said.

He was speaking at a felicitation ceremony organised by the Care and Share International Foundation, founded by actor Mammootty.

"We must learn to help each other and mentor each other to greatness. We need to create a world where people unite and work for the well-being of each other," he said.

According to Mammootty, Mar Chrysostom is a guiding light of his life. "He considers me as a close companion and gives valuable advice to live a meaningful life. He discusses each and every subject with me as if we are the same age. In fact, we are almost the same age. I will be celebrating my 100th birthday soon," Mammootty quipped as the crowd erupted with laughter.

Santhigiri Ashram director Guru Rethnam Jnana Thapaswi, who delivered the key-note address, said that Mar Chrysostom was a symbol of humanity.

In connection with his birth centenary, the Care and Share Foundation will organise free medical camps in tribal belts across the State. Free surgical camps will also be conducted for people suffering from heart, eye and kidney diseases.

Eye specialist Dr. Tony Fernandez, Care and Share Managing Director Fr. Thomas Kurien, direcotrs Dr. K. R. Viswambharan, and Robert Fernandes also spoke on the occasion.
