Kannur: A parish priest who was booked for raping a minor girl has reportedly confessed to the crime.
Fr Robin Vadakkumcherry, who was serving as vicar at the Kottiyoor church in Kannur, was taken into custody late Monday when he was on his way to Nedumbassery from Angamaly in a bid to flee the country, Manorama News reported on Tuesday.
Fr Vadakkumcherry confessed to the crime during interrogation soon after he was taken into custody. His arrest was recorded at the Kelakom police station on Tuesday morning. He has been charged with non-bailable offences under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
The priest, who is also the manager of the school where the victim studied, will be taken to the Kottiyoor church for evidence collection. He will be produced in court later in the day.
The victim's mother had lodged a complaint with the Childline that the priest raped her daughter, a Plus One student, in May 2016. The 16-year-old girl gave birth to a child a few weeks ago.
Based on the complaint, the police filed a case against the priest. The police said there were attempts to cover up the incident and wrongly implicate the girl's father in the case. The cops said the probe will be extended to those who tried to save the culprit.
Action will be taken against the hospital for not reporting to the police about the delivery of the minor girl.
