Thiruvananthapuram: In a bid to mobilize public support and create public opinion against the Center's policies, including demonetization of high-value currency notes, the Congress in Kerala on Friday staged protests across the state.
Senior party leaders, including leader of the opposition Ramesh Chennithala, KPCC president V.M. Sudheeran and Shashi Tharoor, MP, led marches to various district headquarters and central government offices. Party workers and the police clashed at many places.
The police detained Chennithala and Tharoor for staging protest outside the RBI office in the state capital.
"The central and state governments are competing against one another in torturing the people," Chennithala said.
In Thirssur, Sudheeran said demonetization was the 'biggest political and economic corruption ever.' He too courted arrest.
Meanwhile, former chief minister Oommen Chandy said people who believed in Modi had been fooled.
