Kerala floods: Holiday for schools and colleges in 9 districts tomorrow

Thiruvananthapuram: As rainfall continue unabated in Kerala, district collectors of Pathanamthitta, Kasaragod, Malappuram, Idukki, Alappuzha, Thrissur, Wayanad, Kozhikode, Kottayam, Kannur and Ernakulam declared holiday for all educational institutions, including professional colleges and Anganwadis, on Wednesday.

In Pathanamthitta, all educational institutions functioning as relief camps will continue to remain shut on Wednesday also.

Exams postponed

The Kerala Public Service Commission (PSC) has postponed the department level examination scheduled for Wednesday. The B Pharm spot admission has also been rescheduled to another date.

The Calicut University has postponed all exams and viva to be conducted till August 16. The Health University has also postponed all theory exams for Wednesday (August 14). The revised dates would be declared later. Para medical diploma exams to be held on Wednesday have also been postponed.

The Kerala University of Medical Sciences has shifted its MBBS (regular/supplementary) examinations to August 16. The Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) has also decided to conduct its 9th semester exams for BBA, LLB, BCom and LLB supplementary on another date.

The students' union election to be conducted in the colleges of the Mahatma Gandhi University has also been postponed, registrar Dr K Sabukuttan said. The Kerala University exams have been rescheduled.

Kerala Media Academy will conduct the Journalism, TV Journalism and PR PG Diploma exams from August 19 to 27. The KGD (Commerce) Short Hand Malayalam Lower, Higher exams will take place on August 21.

Alerts

Red alerts have been issued for only two districts, Malappuram and Kozhikode, by India Meteorological Department(IMD) on Wednesday. The IMD has issued orange alert for Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts on Tuesday. Ernakulam has been issued an yellow alert.

Strong winds from northwesterly direction speed reaching 45-55 kmph likely along and off Kerala coast. Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea.

People living in hilly regions have been advised against travelling during heavy rains, especially during nights.

The MET office issues Red, Orange and Yellow alerts. Yellow alert is to notify those who are at risk. Orange alerts are intended to ask those who are likely to be affected to be prepared and Red Alerts are intended to take action. As per the Met Department Red alert is the gravest warning on deteriorating weather conditions.
