Thiruvananthapuram: Two NGO Union leaders Asokan and Harilal have been arrested for an attack on the SBI main treasury branch here during the trade union strike on Wednesday.
Nine out of the 13 other suspects have been identified. NGO Union district president Harikumar is the prime suspect.
The branch was open for business on Tuesday, the first day of the strike, too. The strike supporters had threatened the bank officials against functioning during the second day on Wednesday. However, when they refused to be cowed down, the miscreants vandalised the office. Around 10:15am on Wednesday, the miscreants also ransacked the branch manager’s cabin. They smashed his table, a computer and a phone. The security guards at the branch had to intervene to rescue the manager.
NGO Union is affiliated to the ruling CPI(M). The attack was reportedly led by state committee member Suresh Babu and district committee member S Suresh Kumar, both of whom are GST inspectors.
The two-day Bharat Bandh was called by 10 central trade unions (CTUs), protesting the government's snub of their 12-point charter of demands seeking minimum wage of Rs 18,000, social security for all workers and issue related to price rise. The strike had virtually turned into a hartal in Kerala with public transport keeping off the roads, office and business establishments remaining shut.
