Kottayam: A fuel tanker train caught fire at Muttambalam near Kottayam town on Friday, affecting rail traffic. A major accident was averted as railway safety personnel quickly doused the fire. The train then resumed journey.
However, the Kanyakumari Mumbai Express (16382), the Thiruvananthapuram-New Delhi Superfast Express (12625) and the Korba-Thiruvananthapuram Express (22647) were delayed. The incident happened around 1.30 pm.
Preliminary reports suggest that a spark from the overhead electric line caused the fire. Leakage was also detected in six coaches of the train.
Some reports said that there was anomaly in filling fuel. The fuel was filled from the IOC plant in Irumpanam, Ernakulam.
However, the locopilot reportedly resumed the journey soon after the blaze was doused without waiting for an official nod. The train was then stopped at the Chingavanam railway station and was allowed to continue its journey only after inspection was completed.
