Kottayam: In a remarkable first, Kottayam is set to become a safer town with a police hotline for senior citizens and those living alone. The state police chief will inaugurate the project on March 10.
Kottayam will be the first district in the state to provide such a service for the elderly.
How it works
The service aims to provide security to those living alone. The beneficiaries need to have a BSNL land phone at home.
If there is a threat to their safety and security, senior citizens need to pick up the receiver of the phone and hold it for more than 10 seconds, when a call will be sent to the police station.
The system also aims to help those who have health issues which prevent them from dialing the number. The beneficiaries were chosen by the Janamaithri police after house visits. About 500 senior citizens will get the benefit of the system in the first phase of the project.
The police have collected all the details of the beneficiaries.
If beneficiaries see or hear any suspicious activity or sound, they can seek cops' help. They can also contact cops for medical emergencies at night.
Simple & safe
The system is so simple that even elderly and those suffering from amnesia can seek help from cops. The USP of the service is that there is neither a need to remember a phone number nor dial it.
Other calls can be made from the phone; but the number has to be dialled within 10 seconds.
