Marayur, Idukki: It was literally an earth-shaking experience for Ram Kumar and his wife Menaka on Monday night. An over 1000kg bison came down crashing from the sky and landed in the house late in the night and the couple had a miraculous escape as they were sleeping in another room.
The wild visitor had apparently slipped on to the asbestos roof and crash-landed into the house situated on the roadside at Palanattil in Marayur town of Kerala's Idukki district. According to local people, the house's backside is a cliff's brae and the animal must have been grazing there and slipped onto the roof.
After the fall with a thud, the bison, in its desperate effort to find an escape route, wreaked havoc and destroyed whatever it came across in the small house.
Villagers complained that a herd of bison descends on the village along Munnar-Marayur road almost every night and leaves a trail of destruction. The visitor at Ram's house is suspected to be part of this herd.
The beast crushed almost everything in the house, including television, almirah, utensils and furniture, to smithereens.
As soon as the news spread, villagers gathered around and locked the bison inside, demanding compensation from the government.
They claimed that their crops like banana, pepper and coffee were destroyed by the wild animals.
The bison was in the captivity of villagers for nearly 10 hours before the wildlife officials and the police intervened and brokered a 'rescue deal'. The officials assured that a safety fence would be erected and two wardens will be posted in the area.
Unaffected by the chaos, the bison dashed off to the safety of the wilderness on Tuesday morning, nonchalantly.
