Thiruvananthapuram: In a harsh remark, union minister of state for tourism Alphons Kannanthanam on Saturday said the main duty of the legislators in Kerala was attending marriages and funerals.
"Even MPs rush to Kerala to attend such functions," he said here. He said people's representatives should have the ability to carry out works that benefit the people.
Kannanthanam, a national executive member of the BJP, was elected to Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan. His comment is likely to invite the wrath of the MLAs and MPs from Kerala who are known to attend family functions in their constituencies in a bid to stay in touch with the people.
Kannanthanam was earlier targeted by trolls on social media after his comment that the hike in fuel prices was meant to carry out welfare projects for the poor. Miffed over this, he had said that the 'jobless' youth in Kerala were behind the trolls.
