Attn Kerala: Keep these alerts in mind to put thieves at bay

In the wake of rising incidents of thefts and armed robberies in the state, the Kerala police have issued safety guidelines to help citizens stay safe.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind while at home (especially if alone):

* Don't encourage door-to-door sellers. Everything they sell is either available at the local store or online.

* Be wary of alms-seekers.

* Do not open the door unless you know the person.

* Do not discuss your high-profile purchases (gold, cars) in public.

A year ago, the then Pathanamthitta SP, Hari Shankar, had published a list of symbols used by burglars during their 'field work.'

The officer had translated the hidden language of criminals and shared it with the public through his official Facebook page to help stop crimes before they happen.

While some markings indicate the house is a good target or the inhabitants are wealthy or the presence of a vulnerable woman, others warn of alarm system and risks involved.

The ‘tagging’ system also allows the offenders to reconsider a house if it has ‘nothing worth stealing.’
