Kochi: In an early morning robbery, a 15-member gang entered a house near Hill Palace in Thripunithura and took away 50 sovereigns of gold and Rs 20,000 after gagging the five residents.
The police said the house of Nannapilly Veetil Anandakumar at SMP Colony Road was robbed, presumably by a gang from North India.
Investigators said the gang entered the house by breaching the guard bars of a window in the front.
Anandakumar, 49; his mother, Swarnamma, 72; and sons Deepak and Roopak were tied up in their bedrooms while Anandakumar’s wife, Shari, 46; was found in one of the bathrooms.
Anandakumar’s younger son Roopak freed himself around 4.30 am. Neighbors Abhilash George and Akhil Thomas, who heard Roopak’s loud cries for help, rushed to the house and found the family members in distress. They secured the family and called in the police.
Police personnel including city police commissioner M P Dinesh visited the crime scene.
The house was hardly 80 meters away from the railway tracks. This is the third robbery reported in the state in the past three days. Two days ago, a house in Cheemeni, Kasaragod was robbed after slitting the throat of a woman.
Meanwhile, at Pullepadi in Kochi, gold ornaments were robbed from the house of an elderly couple after scaring them with knives.
