Family feud forced Dileep to attack the actress? Twists that shame a film script The police found discrepancies in the answers given by Dileep during his 13-hour questioning at the Aluva Police Club on June 28, offering them more evidence to nail him.

Kochi: Malayalam actor Dileep, eighth accused in the actress attack case, decided to take revenge on the young woman as he suspected her of giving evidence of his relationship with Kavya Madhavan to his then wife Manju Warrier, says the supplementary charge sheet filed in court Wednesday.

This and the alleged conspiracy between Dileep and main accused Sunil Kumar, alias Pulsar Suni, to carry out the attack form the main contents of the charge sheet.

The actress had allegedly given the recording of a phone conversation between Dileep and Kavya to Manju. Dileep also raised this issue and threatened the actress in the presence of actor Siddique during an Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) Star Night event in 2013, and hired Pulsar Suni the next day to carry out the attack, says the charge sheet.

Twists that shame a film script

The case that roiled the entire film industry had witnessed twists and turns that would put the script of an action thriller to shame. These kept an investigation, which would have ended in a gang of criminals, alive and took it to a top player in the Malayalam movie industry.

One of the accused in the February 17 attack was held the same day, while Suni was arrested on the sixth day. Within a week, all the six accused of directly involved in the crime were in police custody. With the police filing the charge sheet on April 18, the investigation was coming to a close.

Even though the police had informed the court about the need to probe the conspiracy angle and Dileep’s name cropped up several times, investigators had to wait for the twists to happen on their own.

Suni’s letter and call

A letter that Suni had purportedly written from the jail through a fellow inmate, naming Dileep as the person who gave the quotation for the crime, reached the actor over WhatsApp. The police, too, got this later, giving them a lead to connect Dileep to the case.

A call that Suni made to the actor’s manager, Appunni, demanding money then opened up a route for the police to reach Dileep. While Suni was being taken to the court, he called Dileep on his phone, giving more reasons for the police to suspect his involvement.

The complaint that boomeranged

On April 20, Dileep approached the state police chief, accusing Suni of blackmailing him over the case. He also handed over the letter received on WhatsApp and a transcript of the phone call.

But the police didn’t find anything factual in his complaint, which though ended up as a tool to connect Dileep and Suni. They got more information from Suni’s jail mate, Vishnu.

Pictures that tell tales

A photo that showed Dileep and Suni together at a film location in Thrissur surfaced at a time when Dileep was busy denying any connection with the prime accused.

The photos that the police got in the last week of June were from the location of Dileep’s latest film at the time. Questioning of people connected with the film reveled further information.

Conspiracy theory

Dileep’s former wife Manju was the first to openly raise the conspiracy theory. This led the police to look closely into the family life of the actor.

Inconsistent answers

The police found discrepancies in the answers given by Dileep during his 13-hour questioning at the Aluva Police Club on June 28, offering them more evidence to nail him. Several of his friends including director Nadhirshah were also questioned. These led to his arrest on July 10. Dileep was let out on bail on October 3, after 85 days in prison.

The actress, who has also worked in Tamil and Telugu films, was abducted and assaulted in a moving car on February 17 night.
