Kakkanad: The food items that are made in the district jail and sold to public will now include chilli chicken, the most popular Indo-Chinese style chicken starter.

Municipality chairperson K K Neenu inaugurated the function by selling the first packet of chilli chicken made in the jail to actor Saju Navodaya (Pashanam Shaji).

Jail superintendent G Chandrababu presided over the function. Chilli chicken was introduced after the sale of chicken biryani introduced last month doubled. A 200g packet of chilli chicken costs Rs 60.

The chapathi branded as 'metro freedom' is sold for Rs 2 a piece. Chicken curry costs Rs 25, egg curry and vegetable curry Rs 15. Under proper security, seven inmates work in two shifts to make biryani, chapati, chilli chicken and other food items under hygienic conditions. Chapathi is made using machine.
