Kollam: Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) leader Antonio William and his two friends who attacked a pregnant woman, her family and policemen in an inebriated condition here have been remanded in police custody on Saturday.

Antonio William, a DYFI leader and member of Needakara Panchayat in Kollam district along with his two friends, Yesudas and Antony George, was caught on camera abusing policemen and threatening them on Friday.

The accused have been produced before a local court and remanded in 14-day police custody. They have been charged under relevant sections of IPC for attempt to murder, attack on women and obstruction of a public servant's duty.

Antonio had rammed his car into another vehicle in which one-month pregnant Taslima and her family were traveling.

Taslima's car was being driven by Shefeeq and her husband Anas was also in the vehicle. Taslima was injured after her head banged on the front seat in the accident following which Anas came out and questioned the other driver.

Angered over this, Antonio and his friends attacked Anas and Shefeeq. They then dragged Taslima out of the vehicle and kicked her in the stomach. She, along with her husband and the man at the wheel, is undergoing treatment at a private hospital.

Two policemen who reached the spot were also attacked by the trio. More cops were called in to arrest the accused.

The trio allegedly tried to attack the cops at the station, including policewomen. Antonio also used abusive language in the police station.

Following the incident, Antonio has been suspended from the primary membership of DYFI, party sources conveyed.

Latest reports also said that the trio has cooled down after the drunken revelry and are cooperating with the police currently.
