Kochi: Intensified checks for vehicle owners, who evade road tax in the state by registering the vehicle in Puducherry or other states with lower tax rates, have thrown up the name of popular Malayalam actor Fahadh Faasil. Officials of the motor vehicles department confirmed they have issued notices to 10 people, and Fahad was one among them.

Earlier this week, reports had alleged that several expensive cars being used in Kerala had the much cheaper Puducherry registration, thereby evading tax of lakhs of rupees that is due to the state.

Officials have issued notices to owners of 10 such vehicles after a search carried out at a residential complex in Thrippunithura. Fahadh Fasil lives in the town but his luxury car is also registered in Puducherry. The officials said they found number plates of some cars removed.

Some of the luxury cars are worth up to Rs 3 crore. As the owners were reported to be out of station, the officials have entrusted the neighbors to inform the owners to produce documents.

The officials have instructions to take stern action if the owners do not respond within 10 days. They said there are rackets in Kerala, which get such cars registered in Puducherry and assist the owners in evading tax. The inspections will continue in the coming days. Multilingual actress Amala Paul, who hails from Aluva, was summoned by the motor vehicles department after allegations that she was using a luxury car in Kerala that was registered in Puducherry with a fake address.
