Erattupetta: A mother cannot simply stand back and watch when the life of her little one is in danger. She is even ready to leap into a 30-foot well to save her toddler.
Alan, a year-and-half baby of Antony and Maya, fell into the well in their house backyard Wednesday morning. The toddler had accompanied his mother, when she went to draw water from the well.
As Maya returned after fetching water, Alan stepped onto a nearby stone to hold the pail. The kid then lost balance and fell into the well. Maya showed great presence of mind and soon leapt into the well.
She grabbed her child and held him above her head before crying out for help. Hearing Maya’s wail, a few local people and neighbors rushed to their house.
Riju Sadanandan, who is a conductor at the KSRTC Pala depot and Maya’s neighbor, descended into the well using another rope and took the toddler in his hands and supported the mother.
Maya and Alan were then safely brought up in a chair lowered by the people. Though Riju suffered minor injuries on the hands, he is just glad that the mother and kid are safe.
