Cops beat up elderly man who mistook police jeep for auto

Thodupuzha: An elderly man was beaten to pulp by the police when he tried to wave down their jeep mistaking it to be an auto-rickshaw.

Mankad Manasseri Madhavan, 64, had reached Thodupuzha cooperative hospital to buy medicines for diabetes. While returning, he signaled the police jeep to stop, thinking it was an auto-rickshaw.

The police officers abused him and later manhandled him both inside the jeep and in lockup, Madhavan said in his complaint.

He was let out on Thursday morning. He also said that the police took away Rs 3,980 that he had with him. A woman sub-inspector helped in getting him released.

However, police claim that Madhavan was arrested for behaving indecently in front of Thodupuzha civil station and a case has been registered against him. He was later sent home with his son and the allegations of assault are false, said sub-inspector V.C. Vishnukumar.
