Kuravilangad: A housewife has been stabbed to death while hanging washed clothes in the courtyard of her house. The alleged assailant, her neighbor, ended his life, consuming acid.
Police are still probing why Moonjanatt Saji alias Sibi, 42, a native of Koovalur Colony in Kadaplamattom panchayat, murdered neighbor Sharmila alias Kunjumol, 44, wife of Araykakunnel Mathew.
Residents in the colony with 16 houses said that the two were on friendly terms and the murder was probably prompted by some family issues. The two families lived next to each other.
Police said Sibi took his own life after the murder. His body was found in a rubber plantation near the colony. A big bottle of acid was lying near the body, and a knife he used to slash his arm was also found.
Sibi was working at a quarry in Kadaplamattom earlier. After he lost that job, he took to driving auto rickshaws for a living. Kunjumol was working as a sweeper at the Kadaplamattom service Co-operative Bank.
She was hanging clothes after returning from work when Sibi attacked her. Kunjumol sustained a deep injury in her neck. Her husband Mathew, who has been advised rest for a heart ailment, was home. Kunjumol's mother was also with the family. Neighbors rushed Kunjumol to the Kottayam Medical College Hospital, but she was declared dead on arrival.
Sibi's body was found within ten minutes of the attack coming to light. Most of the people in the colony were away at work at the time of the attack. The bodies will be taken home after post-mortem examination.
Kunjumol was mother to two boys: Subin and Sobin. Sibi is survived by his wife Manju and sons Jaimon and Jomon.
