Farmer commits suicide outside village office in Kozhikode, official suspended Representational image

Chakkittapara (Kozhikode): Tension prevailed in the Chempanoda area of Kozhikode on Thursday after a farmer committed suicide outside the village office. Chembanoda Kavil Purayidathil Joy, 56, was found hanging outside the village office around 8.30 pm on Wednesday.

Local people refused to remove the body from the office premises. They pointed out that Joy was driven to suicide because of the anguish caused to him by the authorities, who refused to accept his land tax.

People were protesting at the office late at night. The Congress called for a dawn-to-dusk shutdown in Chakkittapara panchayat on Thursday.

The village assistant of the Chempanoda village office was then suspended. The collector, who reached the spot, assured the family that the tax will be accepted on Thursday itself.

Joy had earlier sat on a hunger strike along with his family members in front of the village office as officials had objected to accepting tax for the land which is in his wife's name. People's representatives and others intervened at that stage and the problem was sorted out.

However, officials again started raising objections. The family frequented the office several times to resolve the issue permanently. Authorities, however, continued to ignore their pleas.
