Kuravilangad: The patients and the bystanders at the government hospital in Kadaplamattam can now spend time reading some amazing books while they wait for their turn to consult the doctor. The incredible collection of books is part of the open library set up by the NSS unit of the Vayala government higher secondary school, as part of the Aksharadeepam project. More than 150 books are available here. The books were collected by the team of students led by the NSS volunteer leaders Jins Jose and Aan Mariya Sony.

The open library has some well known classics in Malayalam, popular children’s fiction, comics and health bulletins as well. “You could read until your token number is called. I will find the same book and continue reading when I come the next time. Now, I make sure that I take my reading glasses as well, along with the old prescriptions, whenever I come to the hospital,” says Raman Nair about the open library. Hundreds of patients seek treatment at this community health center that comes under the Uzhavoor block panchayat on a daily basis.

The NSS unit has arranged an open library at the Vayala government higher secondary school as well. NSS coordinator Sabu Joseph said that they are trying to expand and develop the library with the help of book lovers. Principal NT Vijayan, PTA President TK Sajimon and the teachers and parents too offer their whole hearted support to this amazing initiative.
