Often, our career is at the crossroads. We wish to leave our present job and start another but are clueless about how to proceed. Some youngsters who have completed their studies also may face such a predicament. Both of these sections face the same dilemma. The main cause of this problem is the lack of a dream or long-term career plan.
In such a situation, you will never be satisfied with your present employment or joblessness. You may wish like engaging in another venture but may feel that you could end up with something worse. Despair could overcome you.
The ideal solution to the problem is stimulating your thought process by injecting new ideas, viewpoints and experiences. But care needs to be exercised regarding the following aspects:
The first step that has to be taken is to abolish all the deadlines that you set for building a perfect career. You may have to realize that the answers to the questions you ask now would not be sufficient to help chart a 20-year career plan.
The mind will become free as soon as you cancel all the deadlines. Remember that a peaceful mind would be able to find quality solutions to the problem you face.
If you have financial issues, join a short-term project or a temporary job to find the money to give a break to your career. If funds are not an issue, immediately take a total break.
Focus on yourself
The next step is to conduct a self-evaluation. Do not be concerned about lack of education, money or personal contacts. All these are only temporary shortfalls. Think on a broader canvas and identify deficits you can fill yourself.
Invest in reading, people and new projects. Also, consider opportunities that you had earlier thought were risky. Travel a lot, start a new business, do an internship in a startup or engage in social work with a non-governmental organization.
When considering a job, instead of focusing on positions or promotions, think about its content. A person who has job experience would be well aware that there is little connection the title one holds and the real work carried out.
In other words, when searching for a new job, find out what are the real activities involved. The advice of people already engaged in the post can be sought for this.
You need to ponder over the contributions you can make to the new employer, colleagues and the business in general. Such a thought would change your worldview as well as inspire you to look at the career in a better light.
We often give importance to our skills while considering a new job. Good writing or coding abilities, for example. But when you are perplexed over a job move, leave all these thoughts aside and concentrate on some goals. When a target that has to be achieved after a few years is set, you would be able to find numerous ways to reach it.
After deciding on the way suitable for you, shift your attention to the present. Acquire skills that are necessary to achieve your goal. Also, ensure that the target is related to the job. If you say that you would be the CEO of billion-dollar firm in ten years, it is a goal. But if you want to become famous and attract fans seeking your autograph, it is not a target.
Instead of pondering over your next job, think with whom you would like to work with. That could be somebody who is part of your network or a person whom you hold in high esteem. Working with a good boss, leader or colleague would be a useful learning experience. It can be considered as an opportunity for getting on to an excellent career path.
While concentrating on your job, do not ignore other aspects of your life. You have multiple roles in society. Apart from being somebody who earns money, you are also a friend, family member, son, daughter, husband, wife and a part of society.
When despair related to the job affects you, ensure that the other relationships do not suffer. This is because all these together constitute your social support system.
Complete your tasks
While engaging in all these activities, take care to complete the tasks you had taken up. When you abandon a work midway, it negatively affects your self-confidence and slows down your progress to achieve the career goal.
