Paulose’s magnificent house named ‘Thappala’ is at Vengola near Perumbavoor in Ernakulam district in Kerala. It wouldn’t be an overstatement if someone describes this house as an ‘abode that is living’ as it is amazingly self-sufficient when it comes to energy conservation. The electricity that is required to run the house is produced by the solar panels that is installed on the roof. Besides, there is an organic vegetable garden too in the terrace.

Roads run along the three sides of the ‘L’ shaped plot spread over an area of 40 cents. The elevation features unique frames on the three sides allowing distinct views from different directions. This plot is a bit raised with lots of hard rocks. The structure is built without removing or levelling the hard rocks and the soil to retain the natural look of the premises. The elevation that features square boxes and louvres is quite eye-catching. The solar plant on the roof too has been turned into a designer element here.

The beautiful mansion that sprawls in 5497 sq ft area has a sit-out, formal and family living areas, dining space, courtyard, kitchen, five bedrooms, balcony and a terrace garden. The spacious interiors are designed in the open style. Meanwhile, the spaces are arranged around the spectacular courtyard.

The house boasts of many unique technological features that aren’t usually seen in houses across Kerala. The geothermal system is one of them. This system is used in cold countries to maintain the temperature inside the rooms. This technology, however, is used in the reverse format in this house. The warm air inside the house is sucked into the space below the foundation to cool it. This cool air is then brought back into the house to cool down the interiors. The louvres that are installed near the stairway too help in cooling down the air inside the house.

The formal living area is designed in double height. Classy furniture and beautiful paintings enhance the elegant look of this area. The design of the dining table follows the bench concept. One could enjoy the lush greenery of the courtyard from here.
