Keralites love spacious houses that take up most of the area of the plot in which it stands. However, Nidheesh doesn’t believe in that concept and it is evident from his house that is built in just 6 cents of the 30 cents land. “My 30 cents plot at Puthiyara Road in Kozhikode is 2 meters above the road level. I run a cricket training academy here. When I decided to build my house, it posed a challenge as I had to shift this training center to somewhere else. It was then that architect Sandeep Kollarkandi gave me the idea that I could build the house without actually shifting the center to different location,” says Nidheesh.
Taking advantage of the uneven surface of the plot, the house is designed as a structure that grows upwards. 6.5 cents were contoured off for the construction of the house, on one side of the plot. It is at this small portion of land that the house stands in four stories. The structure is designed in the box shape to save more space. The tile claddings are the highlight of the exteriors. The powder blue texture paint used on the elevation adds the perfect contrast here. Other than these minor design features, the exteriors are simple and exude elegance.
The car porch is in the basement of the 2200 sq ft house. The sit-out, living and dining areas, kitchen, two bedrooms and a bathroom are arranged in the ground floor. Meanwhile, there is a hall, home theatre, two more bedrooms and an open terrace in the first floor. The staircase room and the open terrace are just above it.
The building materials are meticulously purchased to make the house look incredibly attractive. Flamed granite is pasted on the boundary wall. Meanwhile, shabad stones are paved on the front yard. Kota stones and granites in leather finish are used for flooring in the interiors.
A guava tree that stood in the plot is retained near the dining area. A door from the dining hall opens to the patio here. This has now been turned into a beautiful courtyard that fills the interiors with pleasant greenery.
The unique design of the stairway ensures that spaces aren’t wasted or left unused. The hand railings are made using rectangular stainless steel rods. A part of the open space has been converted into a utility space by securing it with grille work.
The kitchen cupboards are done in plywood – mica finish. Granite is paved on the counter top. Meanwhile, wall tiles are pasted on the backsplash. An adjacent work area completes this space.
Custom made cots and wardrobes, designed as single unit, are used in the bedrooms. All the bedrooms are bath attached. Panelling and wall papers adorn the headboards in the bedrooms. The kids’ room features the beautiful colour combination of pink and white.
The most amazing advantage is that Sudheesh can manage the activities at the training academy from his home itself. Besides, a huge amount of money that would have required for shifting the institute to a different location and arranging the facilities there had been saved.
