When Noushad felt his 20-year-old house required a modern facelift to make it more attractive and stylish, he didn’t hesitate at all to actually do it. Though the family had asked the architect to make minor alterations, Noushad says that the house, now, looks as stylish and elegant as a brand new one.

The family wanted the interiors to look vaster and spacious which receives abundant supply of natural light. They chose lighter shades of colour to adorn the walls. Besides, the family members, who weren’t impressed by the congested spaces in the old house, demanded spacious interiors which gave them freedom to move around comfortably. It was architect Imthyas of the Ingrid Architects who gave an amazing facelift to this house by adding lots of box structures in the front elevation.

The changes

Noushad’s was an ordinary terraced house which was built 20 years ago following the design patterns of that time. He decided to renovate the house as he wasn’t ready to spent money to build a new one. The two-storied house had one bedroom in the lower floor and two bedrooms in the upper storey. However, these rooms were small. The stairway which began from the dining area took up lots of space and had a small verandah in the front.

The front yard is now beautified by paving stones and natural grass that amazingly complements the renewed look of the house. The exteriors are square-shaped and the sun shades in box structures lend a chic look to the elevation. The long lines are a highlight of the elevation. White, brown and black hues create a mesmerizing colour palette which is soothing for the eyes.

A new sitting area extends from the façade. From the sit-out one can enter the living area. Stylish flooring patterns, lighter shades of colours and chic furniture enhance the elegance of the living area. The stairway is arranged on one side of the light tower which connects both the floors and there is small water fountain on the other side. This water fountains adds a pleasant and refreshing look to the dining area which is illuminated with natural light. A wash area completes the dining space.

The stair way made using steel and teak wood is re installed in the living area. The hand railings are done in wood and glass finish to make the area look vaster. The classic combination of wood and Italian marble adds regal elegance to the renovated interiors.

Alterations have been made in the upper storey as well. The two bedrooms are transformed into a spacious dressing area. A new bedroom block with two rooms is built on the west side. Besides, a brand new suite room too adorns the upper floor. The new bedrooms have all the modern facilities and look incredibly stylish as well.

As the plot is small, it was a challenge to build a new block in the west side. The architect realized it would make the interiors darker. So, a light tower is constructed between the two blocks which brings lots of pleasant sun shine into the interiors. It is this central part which connects both the blocks in the house. The newly added west block has even altered the look of the exteriors significantly.

The kitchen which was built in old style is given a modern and chic makeover. Counter top replaced the wood fire stove which took up much of the space. Storage has been given prime importance in the renovated kitchen. There are lots of cupboards and shelves in this kitchen which also ensure excellent cross ventilation. The island kitchen is the highlight here. The open terrace is modified to a party space. The owner says that the guests are overwhelmed by the spectacular transformation of his house, that too, by giving importance to meticulous utilization of spaces.
