Sameer had built his elegant single storied house, overcoming the challenges posed by the narrow 7 cents plot in Mullanpara, Malappuram. There are living and dining areas, two bedrooms and a kitchen in this beautiful house which has an area of 1000 sq ft. Vast and spacious rooms and the interiors which let in lots of natural light and air are the highlights of the house which emanate the unique charm of minimalism. The construction of the house was completed on a reasonable budget of Rs 27 lakh. It was architect Navas of the Lezara Designers who designed this house to perfectly suit the unique shape of the plot.
More than the budget, it was shape of the plot which posed a challenge to Sameer and his architect alike. Many tried to dissuade Sammer from building a house on this plot, though rectangular in shape the plot was extremely narrow. They advised that a spacious and comfortable house couldn’t be built in this piece of land. It was at that time Sameer decided to entrust the construction of his dream dwelling with designer Navas, who is also his relative. This collaboration had inspired the idea of building a spacious house which exudes the charm of the contemporary architectural style.
The exteriors remind one of the traditional architecture. Soothing mustard yellow hue adds the perfect contrast to the off-white shade in the elevation. The terracotta claddings too add a unique charm to the exteriors. Though the house looks like it is double storied, it is actually a single storied house with all the necessary facilities. It is the upstairs living area which makes the house appear as double storied.
Though the car porch is a bit away from the house, it is connected using a landscape feature. The boundary wall and the gate perfectly match the general design theme of the house. The triangular pillars, just in front of the sit out, are eye catching features. The natural stone claddings add a rustic charm to it which beautifully contrasts with the chic exteriors. Truss work is done over the sit-out and vitrified tiles and granite are paved on the floor here.
The spacious interiors are comfortable and beautiful. The living and the dining areas are designed in the ‘L’ shape. The TV unit is installed at a spot which is visible from both these areas. The furniture in pleasant electric blue hue adds a splash of color. Gypsum is used on the ceiling and the walls are highlighted with charming wall papers. The flooring done in the matte wood finish is another mesmerizing feature of the interiors.
The stairway is adjacent to the dining area. The olive green color here is equally soothing and attractive. A huge opening in the landing brings pleasant sun shine into the interiors.
There is enough room space in both the bedrooms. False ceiling in gypsum – glass is done over the bed space. Only the master bedroom is bath-attached. The house is designed in such a way that two more bedrooms could be constructed in the upper storey in the future.
The kitchen too follows the minimal style. Granite is paved on the counter top and the cabinets are done in plywood.
There are lots of windows to ensure abundant supply of natural light and fresh air. Besides, the excellent cross ventilation makes the interiors pleasant and comfortable. Truss work is done in the stair area and is paved with roofing tiles to ensure rapid air flow inside the house. The sunlight coming in through the glass tiles on the roof illuminates the interiors, thus significantly reducing the energy consumption during the day time.
The entrance door of the house is made of black siris wood and the windows are done in teak. Cement door frames are used in the rest of the house. Readymade steel doors are installed in bedrooms. The upper part of the stairway is done in stainless steel and the rest of it is in GI pipes.
