Terrarium is a decorative glass container in which plants are aesthetically arranged in layers. The greenery from the plants, combined with the charming elegance of the glass container and an array of colors inside it, makes a terrarium extremely eye catching and beautiful. It is from the Europe that the idea of terrarium entered our households.
There are two types of terrariums depending upon on the containers used - one with the sealed glass containers and the other with the semi opened ones. The temperature and humidity inside the sealed terrariums would be more, making it extremely difficult to tend to the plants inside. However, the semi-open ones do not trap humidity and is less hot inside. It is difficult to grow cactus inside a sealed terrarium. The garden inside a terrarium has to be beautified with elegant landscaping.
Fittonia, syngonium, sansevieria, cryptanthus, pilea, strawberry begonia, cacti, air plants, spiderworts, African violet, different types of ferns, tillancia, peperomia and acquarium plants like limnophila and rotala could be grown in a terrarium. The terrariums with green plants could be kept in places where less sunshine falls. Colorless glass containers, with no prints or images on it and which let in light could be chosen to grow such plants. Pannal plants could be grown on the surface of the terrarium to create an effect of forest.
Shiny, round pebbles, colorful stones, sand and wooden pieces could be used to make the terrarium more attractive. The planting mixture could be prepared by adding more cocopeat to grow the aquarium plants which require more wetness. However, to grow succulent varieties or cacti, the mixture should have the capacity to drain water as well.
The height of the container depends upon the length of the root. The plants should be trimmed regularly. The planting mixture and other materials should be dried well before assembling the terrarium. It could even be sterilized by washing them in pesticides.
The outer surface of the glass container should be kept clean by regularly wiping with a piece of wet cloth. If the tip of the leaves begin to dry up, then it indicates that the temperature inside the container is increasing. So, special care must be taken to prevent the glass bowl from breaking.
The price of a single piece of terrarium begins from Rs 1000. However, it may go up to Rs 20,000 depending upon the variety of plants, quality of the glass bowl and other decorations.
