Most Keralites who plan to build their dream abode often imagines it to exude the majestic charm of the traditional architecture of Kerala. Rajiv, a native of Kasargod, proudly shows around his brand new house built in the traditional architectural style, that too, on a moderate budget. The incredibly charming house perfectly fits the bucolic setting of the village called Bellicoth, which has lush green fields and fresh springs.
Rajiv, who works in Mumbai, wanted a house in his hometown, which would be the perfect getaway from his hectic urban life. It was decided that the house should be designed in such a way that it requires minimum maintenance as the family doesn’t stay here permanently. Architect Syam Kumar of Forms and Spaces has designed a perfect dwelling which suits dreams and aspirations of Rajiv and his family.
“I have noticed the houses built with laterite blocks that were designed by Syam. I was really impressed by them and entrusted him the responsibility to build our dream house too. I admire the old ancestral homes built in the traditional architectural style.
I expressed my admiration by designing the exterior of my house like that. Locally sourced laterite blocks are used for the construction of the house,” said Rajiv.
Instead of cement, lime was used to affix the laterite blocks. Truss work is done over flat roof and is paved with roofing tiles. The space between it could be used as an excellent utility area.
The climate here is humid all throughout the year. So, elaborate verandahs, called ‘njali’ in the local dialect, are built around the house. This feature prevents the harsh sunrays from reaching the interiors. Every room in the house opens to the beautiful green fields around. Lots of windows are arranged to let in the cool breeze and circulate it around the house. The family is pleasantly surprised as the temperature inside the house always remains cool and refreshing, even during the blaming summer.
The pillars are carved in stone and exhibit the regal elegance of the Chettinad style. Red oxide is applied on the floor in the verandah while exclusive terracotta tiles are paved in the interiors. These provide a cooling effect, often making the feet comfortable as you walk over it. The family love to lie down on the floor, enjoying the soothing charm of these tiles.
The interiors are designed with only the necessary facilities. There is a living space, kitchen, dining area and two bedrooms in this elegant house. The stunning views of the green fields from both the bedrooms are truly awe-inspiring. The bedrooms are bath attached with in – built cupboards for storage facilities. The pooja room is an eye-catching feature of the interiors.
The kitchen is done in aluminum fabrication and is complete with a breakfast counter. There is an adjacent work area as well. The construction of the house, including the structure and elegant furnishing, was completed on a moderate budget of Rs 32 lakhs.
Rajiv and his family are thrilled that they have an elegant abode in their beautiful village where they can unwind and relax.
