How art lends this house in 'Kumbalangi Nights' look real
The art director had made the house look years old without applying a single coat of paint.

Napoleon’s sons live in a dilapidated house at a desolate isle in Kumbalangi. Just like the cats and dogs discarded there, the four brothers living in the house seem to be lost and unwanted. The audience feels a unique emotional bonding towards the house which plays a significant role in the movie 'Kumbalangi Nights'. However, not many know that the rugged house, which exposes the bare bricks in mossy green, door-less doorways curtained by old cloth pieces, was specially constructed for the movie. The credit for creating the house with such originality goes to the film’s art director Jyothish Sankar.

Known for his amazing works in super hit movies like Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum, Joseph and Ibilis, Jyothish Sankar says that Kumbalangi Nights projects the success of amazing team work. The art director and his team had designed the house after careful observation, meticulous planning and dedicated efforts.

“We worked really hard for Kumbalangi Nights. The charming house that is shown in the movie was actually built for it. Many find it hard to believe that even the fungus attached to the walls of that house was carefully created to make it look real and believable,” says Prasant Amaravila, Jyothish’s assistant.

Art director Jyothish Sankar had made the house look years old, without applying even a single coat of paint, after carefully observing such houses and structures for quite long. “All of us feel inexplicable happiness and excitement in our hearts when the film is running into packed theaters and also when people appreciate our work,” noted Prasant.
