Kozhikode native Shabeer’s house stands out for its unique and creative design which beautifully overcomes the space constraints of the 3 cents plot in which it stands. Though Shabeer and his family had many dreams about their dwelling, they were skeptical whether they would be able to build the home of their dreams on a small plot.
Shabeer had entrusted designer Sanoop, who is also a family friend to prepare the plan for his house. Sanoop saw the plot and spoke to the family members about their ideas, before drawing the final draft of the plan.
The elevation of the house is designed in the box style to utilize maximum space. Light shades adorn the walls of the interiors. There is a car porch, living space, dining area, kitchen, work area and 3 bedrooms in the house which has an area of 1276 sq ft.
The interiors are designed in the open style, by avoiding unnecessary walls between spaces. It helps to make the indoors look more vast and spacious. The interiors are simple and not over-crowded with too many decors or furniture.
There are enough features, like the vertical pergolas on the wall adjacent to stair way, which lets in lots of natural light and fresh air into the house. The stairway leads to a small living space upstairs.
The family wanted to enjoy the beauty of the nature from inside the house. The vertical skylights on the wall up-stair living area welcome the morning sunshine into the house making it pleasant and beautiful. Shabeer says that the family loves to watch raindrops falling on the skylight when it is raining outside.
There is a small patio adjacent to the dining area, closer to the boundary wall. The roof here is built using metal and glass. A wash area is arranged here. The kitchen is furnished using plywood and mica finish. Granite is paved on the counter top.
The three bedrooms are bath-attached with in-built wardrobes. The profile lights below the cot add a touch of elegance to the bedrooms.
The construction of the house, including the furnishing was completed for Rs 30 lakhs. “Our friends and relatives who come to see our new house often say, with wonder that it doesn’t look like a house which is built on just a 3 cents plot. We feel extremely happy and proud when we hear such comments,” says Shabeer excitedly.
Here are the factors which helped lower the cost of construction:
» The building materials sourced mainly from the locality
» The area was less so, more importance was given to wise utilization of space
» Old furniture were reused
» Less expensive vitrified tiles paved on the floor
» Old wood were used to make wardrobes and shutters of cupboards
» Paints of lighter shades used on the walls
