Mahamood, a native of Koothuparamba in Kannur, has an incredible tale of renovation to tell. Recently, he refurbished his 60-year-old ancestral house into a modern dwelling without actually losing the inherent charm of the old structure. The 5432 sq ft elegant house stands regally in a sprawling 5 acres plot.

The basic structure of the house wasn’t changed much as the main door opened to the beautiful nature outside. Mahamood is an admirer and seasoned collector of old furniture, curios and antique show pieces. So, a lot of elements were retained for its old world charm and elegance.

There is a living space, dining area, kitchen and four bath-attached bedrooms in the house. The family and formal living spaces and the dining areas are arranged as part of the spacious main hall itself.

Features which are retained in the house:

» The roof paved with mud tiles and the front portion including sit-out has been retained

» The ceiling of wood wasn’t changed at all for its incredible look

» The antique furniture, which looks amazing has been used even after the renovation

» Old wood were used for furnishing in order to maintain the rustic finish

» The old boundary wall and the stairs in front of the house too were retained

Changes that were made inside the house:

» Athamkudi tiles which were paved in the main spaces were replaced with new ones

» Old kitchen was transformed into modern modular one

» The work area was changed into a kitchen cum living area

» Tiles with wooden texture were paved in bedrooms

» Dressing areas and attached bathrooms were added in the bedrooms

» The old landscaping was renovated by growing buffalo grass

Useless trees were cut down and more fruit-bearing trees were planted instead. Mahamood says that discussions with architect Abdulla Kutty, who is also a dear friend, had helped a lot in forming unique ideas for the renovation of the house. He credits Abdulla Kutty for changing their house into a modern dwelling by retaining the elegant charm of the traditional architectural style.
