Sheji Mathew Ozhukayil has built his 2912 sq ft charming house at the picturesque Vazhakkulam, which is known as the ‘pineapple city’ of Ernakulam district. This elegant house has been designed without disrupting the natural setting of the plot.
The plot, which is at a height and in two levels, was not flattened while building the house. Instead, the car porch, verandah and the living area was built on the ground level while, the family living area, dining space, prayer area, 4 bedrooms, wash room, kitchen, work area and storage space are on the first level.
The light court lets in lots of natural sun shine into the interiors of the house. The pergola assures excellent air circulation and helps to always maintain a pleasant temperature in the indoors. The heightened roof, paved with mud tiles regulates the temperature inside the house, and the space between it can be used as a utility area as well.
Custom-made modular kitchen and furniture enhances the classy look of the interiors. Blinds are used on the windows instead of cloth curtains.
The false ceiling is done in a combination of veneer, ply and gypsum. The doors and windows are made in teak wood and polished.
The vitrified tiles paved on the floor have been polished with epoxy using spacer. The bathrooms are separated into dry and wet areas using glass partitions. Polished natural stones are paved on the front courtyard with grass grown between each stone. This also helps to absorb the rain water into the earth.
