It was from the mimicry stages that Kalabhavan Shajohn made his grand entry into the silver screen. However, more than the comic roles, his incredible portrayal of serious roles have won him praise from the audience and the critics alike.
Shajohn had played quite a number of roles as a policeman with villainous streaks, and the fact that his own father was a police man would be a curious coincidence. “My father wished to make me a policeman. But that didn’t happen. It must be because of his blessings that I was able to play a number of roles as a policeman in the movies, even though I didn’t become one in real life,” smiles Shajohn.
Shajohn’s father was a head constable in the police department and his mother was a nurse. His only brother Shibu is working in Bahrain. His wife Dini is a homemaker and the couple has two kids, daughter Hanna who is in class 7 and son Yohann who studies in class 3.
Shajohn had spent most of his childhood at the police quarters in Kottayam and the family stayed there until he was a pre-degree student. In 1993, the family purchased a house at Varisserry. Shajohn remembers it as an ordinary house with a terrace. He did his schooling at Kottayam and was enrolled at St. Mary’s College in Manarcaud for his graduation. The actor became a popular face in mimicry when he was a student, and later began doing TV shows which finally opened the doors to films.
Shajohn’s father died when Malayalam cinema began to get settled in Kochi. So about 14 years ago, the family sold their house in Kottayam and moved to Kochi so that Shajohn could become more active in the films. They had first purchased a 2 BHK flat in Pachalam and later shifted to the present 3 BHK flat near the international stadium in Kaloor.
Shajohn’s elegant flat was designed by D’Life Home Interiors, a popular interior designing firm in Kochi. “I had entrusted D’Life with the responsibility to design the interiors after seeing Anoop Menon’s flat in Kochi. The interiors are done in the classy combination of white and brown theme. The kids’ room was designed as per their taste and preferences. The interiors look more spacious as too many decors or furniture are not stuffed inside. Minimal lighting has been used inside the flat. My mind would become calm when I enter my house after a day of hectic filming schedule. So I love to spend my time in the flat when I am not working,” says Shajohn.
The TV area and the kitchen are Shajohn’s favorite spaces in the flat. The family members gather at the TV area to enjoy some happy time together. A breakfast counter has been arranged in the kitchen for Shajohn to have a lovely chat with his wife while she cooks and serves him some delicious dishes.
Shajohn has actors Nivin Pauly, Suraj Venjaranmoodu and composer Deepak Dev as his neighbours in the apartment complex. He says, “Though we are neighbours we hardly see each other here. It is at some movie’s location that we regularly meet. However, we do get together when all of us are at our homes at the same time, though it happens rarely. Among my close friends in the industry, Mia recently built a house. Her new house at Pala is very beautiful and anyone would fall in love with it.”
No more houses
Shajohn says that he was first skeptical whether his mother would be able to adjust with life in a flat, when the family moved to Kochi. But she soon adapted to her new home. The actor says that there is better security for his family in a flat, especially when he is not home most of the times. Besides, the family members get a chance to be friends with the residents of other flats who are their same age. It keeps them engaged and active. So Shajohn says that he has no plans to construct another house for the family as he is happy at his beautiful flat.
