NRI computer professional Mathews George had no apprehensions whatsoever to build his house via long distance contact. Each move, each design was carefully monitored by the owner and his wife through WhatsApp and Skype.
The 4,000 sq ft house on 16 cents of land in Sasthamcotta, Kollam, is semi-contemporary in style. The uniqueness of the elevation is the design of the gate and the compound walls which look like an extension of the main structure.
The highlight of the interiors is the focus on light and ventilation. Natural light streams in all through the day and not a single electric bulb needs to be switched on till 6 pm, says the owner.
High on utility and practical use, the house is easy to maintain. The design is such that it does not need elaborate clean-ups particularly when the family is away for most part of the year.
The entry to the drawing room is from a passage. The drawing room is tasteful and simple. Highlighter lights and curios have been used to demarcate room space. The main hall has been done up in double height with skylights on the roof top. It’s therefore cool inside and very bright as well. The spiral staircase is a designer’s delight and the dining space has been set below the staircase.
There are five bedrooms, with each room granting privacy. Attached bathrooms and wardrobes make the rooms more comfortable.
The kitchen, though simple, is stylish and looks fetching with its counter tops in granite. What makes the house stand out is its minimalist design elements. Nothing is out of place. The stress is on utility and ease of maintenance.
