Simple, elegant and very modern. That’s Sajida’s 2,800 sqft white, box-shaped house on eight cents of land in Kozhikode. The design was conceived, developed and executed by architects of Kozhikode-based firm Concern Architectural Consultancy. Interestingly, Sajida happens to be their colleague at the firm.

The biggest hurdle before the designers was the loose nature of the soil. When one side stood elevated, the other was much below its level. But all the obstacles were overcome.

Elevation The designers went in for flat roofs in place of sloped ones in a bid to cut cost.

The 'padippura', also constructed like a square box, matches with the main design and is made to look like an extension of the elevation. What gives the structure its striking looks are the natural stone and brick stone claddings.

Living room The interiors look wide and spacious with the ceiling in double height complementing the look of openness.

The vitrified flooring tiles come in shades of white and cream. Wood-themed highlighter tiles separate the formal living from the rest of the space. Even the smallest space or nook available has been put to good use.

A simple, yet elegant table in glass and wood adds to the elegance of the dining space. Just beside the dining space stands the modular kitchen with a breakfast counter attached inside.

The kitchen cabinets are in multi-wood. As per the request of the owners, a direct entry was provided from the master bedroom to the kitchen.

The cantilever steps are elegant and stylish. The handrails are in wood and glass. A quiet little space down by the stairway doubles up as a nook where folks can enjoy some bonding time. The skylights atop the staircase ceiling brighten up the area. The yellow shade on one side of the staircase not only highlights the looks of the place but adds to the décor.

There are five bedrooms with attached bathrooms and wardrobes. With meticulous planning and strict budgeting, the house was finished well within the estimate.
